Managing and developing sports clubs & associations is starting to look more like running a business. The Karlstad-based management consultancy Effect Management receives the trust from the Cruyff Institute to implement the newly started Club & Sports Manager training.

"Running sports clubs and associations is starting to look more and more like running a business. There is a lot of money in sports and then it is not enough to have had a successful career as a practitioner to manage the business. This training should give the participants the best possible platform to stand on when they have to develop their clubs and associations from more than a sporting perspective," says Anders Sewerin, CEO of the Cruyff Institute.

The Cruyff Institute started its activities in the Nordics in 2011 with the well-known Management Diploma for Athletes program, where profiles such as Peter "Foppa" Forsberg, Daniel Tjernström, Magdalena Forsberg, Mattias Jonsson and Jesper Blomqvist participate. Peter Rovér from Effect Management with a background from IFL at the Stockholm School of Economics helped start the program and is now the elite athletes' teacher.

Now the Cruyff Institute has launched its second program, which aims to increase business and leadership skills within Swedish clubs and associations. And for that, they have chosen Karlstad-based Effect Management over other actors, mainly from Stockholm.

"We choose Effect Management because they have proven that they maintain the highest quality. They are also particularly interesting for their practical business anchoring, their academic connection and the fact that they have a very good educational tool in the simulation tool Simbiz", adds Sewerin.

Effect Management, which has extensive experience in qualified development and training programs, was commissioned to design and implement the program.

"We are happy that the Cruyff Institute, which is based in Stockholm, chooses a Karlstad-based company for this. My experience of having worked with Cruyff in the program that is carried out in collaboration with the IFL at the School of Economics is that they set the absolute highest standards for quality, and we see this as a sign that they value our way of driving development," says Peter Rovér, CEO of Effect Management.

"We also see a higher purpose in this. Swedish sports and Swedish athletes need greater opportunities to develop businesses and build sustainable careers, even after the best years in sports," adds Rovér.

The Club & Sports Manager program covers a total of 12 days with additional project and group work between meetings. The participants, who all hold important leadership positions within clubs and associations, undergo four modules focusing on the areas; Strategy & Business, Finance & Law, Leadership and Management Team Work as well as Sports Management. As a platform in the program, participants run virtual companies in the business simulation Simbiz. The final module of the program is carried out at the Cruyff Institute Campus in Barcelona. After completing the program, participants become Certified Club & Sports Managers, and members of the Cruyff Institute's global alumni network. The program started in February 2012, and the next estimated start is this autumn.

If Cruyff Institute: Soccer legend Johan Cruyff founded the Johan Cruyff Institute for Sport Studies to meet the market's need for academically educated individuals with a background in sports. The programs are tailored and developed with the aim of giving the participants better conditions to build a second career in the future, based on their unique and important experiences from sports. For over 10 years, the Cruyff Institute has trained athletes in Holland, Spain and Mexico.

Cruyff Institute Sweden started in 2011 and runs, among other things, the Management Diploma for Athletes (MDA) in collaboration with IFL at the Stockholm School of Economics, and the Club & Sports Managers Training (KSU) in collaboration with Effect Management. MDA is designed for elite athletes who want to build a career outside of sports, while KSU is designed for active managers and leaders in sports.
