Midroc Automation in Karlstad has delivered a fully integrated logistics solution for LKAB's ore transport underground on the new main level in the Kiruna mine (KUJ1365). The solution for process and train control has been developed in close collaboration with Bombardier Transportation, which as a subcontractor to Midroc is responsible for train control.
With systems and infrastructure from Midroc, the ore is moved automatically and at the highest possible speed from the breaking point to the call, without compromising on personal safety. The ore trains run quickly, safely and on time. With the new main level 1,365 meters underground, LKAB ensures the ore supply for another 20 years. The mine in Kiruna is the world's most advanced underground mine where operation is largely automatic.
A proof that the system developed for LKAB's new main level works well is that the American company Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold also chose the same solution. Freeport will use Midroc and Bombardier's process and train control systems for its Grasberg mine in Papua Indonesia, the world's largest gold deposit and third largest copper deposit. There, the efficient automated and rail-based system makes a big difference to both environmental impact and safety.
